Skaters back in action in Seoul

Great Britain’s short track speed skaters are back in action today for the second stage of the Samsung ISU World Cup in Seoul, 3-6 October, just three days after World Cup I in Shanghai.

The nine-strong squad will be looking to build on their performance in Shanghai, where the squad achieved two top-eights courtesy of Elise Christie, and four skaters progressed through to the quarter-finals in their respective individual events.

Performance Director of GB Short Track, Stuart Horsepool said: “We had mixed results in Shanghai. We saw some strong individual performances from a number of athletes, but a couple of the skaters will be looking to improve on their results from last week.

“Short track is a sport where you are constantly learning no matter what stage you are at. You have to take what you can from each competition and find ways of improving and building on that.”

Christie, who competed in all three distances in Shanghai, will be focusing on the 1000 and 1500 metres in Seoul. Horsepool added: “Elise performed well in Shanghai. Getting a medal in short track is very hit and miss, but to finish consistently in the top eight is a very good place to be.”

Jon Eley, Richard Shoebridge, Paul Stanley and Jack Whelbourne will be in action in both the men’s 5000m relay and their respective individual events. In the women’s squad, Shanghai semi-finalist Charlotte Gilmartin,  along with Alex Stanley and Kat Thomson will also be competing in individual distances, and join Elise Christie for the women’s 3000m relay.

The event follows the same format as World Cup I, with the pre-preliminaries, preliminaries, and heats taking place on days one and two, and the World Cup sessions commencing on days three and four.

Day one will feature the qualifying rounds of the 1500 and 500 metres, with the 1000m and relay events on day two.

Full results will be available at, or watch the action on the ISU Skating Channel on the 5-6 October at
