Development squad take to the ice for Star Class Cup

As the second World Cup gets underway in Asia, GB Short Tracks Development athletes take to the ice for the first Star Class Cup in Bolzano, Italy. The three day competition (4-6 October) is the first of six Star Class Cup events this season, which culminate with the Europa Cup Final in March.

Development athletes Billy Simms (20), Murray Cochrane (19) and Farrell Treacy (18) will be joined by GB Short Track’s newest members, Jack Burrows (17) and Aydin Djemal (17) who qualified to join the British squad at the National Squad Open Trials in August.

Over the course of the competition the skaters will compete over three distances against some of Europe’s top skaters. Talent ID Coach, and former Olympic short track skater, Paul Worth said:

“As the first European competition of the season, it provides these young athletes with a good opportunity to try out new skills in competition. We are not focussed on results here because it is a learning competition, and the aim is for these skaters to gain valuable experience on the international circuit.”

Dundee skater and overall winner of the Albertville Star Class last season Murray Cochrane said: “We’ve put in some good work in training over the summer and after watching the rest squad compete out in Asia, I’m feeling really motivated and I can’t wait to get out and race in Italy.”

Also joining the British team in Bolzano is junior skater Jennifer Pickering from Nottingham.
