Podium skaters face season finale in Montreal
Seven of GB Short Track’s podium athletes are in Canada this week ahead of the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, which take place from Friday 14- Sunday 16 March at the Maurice-Richard Arena in Montreal.
The team of seven includes the five athletes that represented Team GB at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, who since arriving back from Russia the group have had just one rest day before returning to full training to prepare for this, their final international competition of the season.
“The challenge for the team at the Worlds is going to be maintaining the form they showed at the Olympics in Sochi and also getting into the frame of mind to compete one final time this season,” said Performance Director Stuart Horsepool.
“Worlds will be equally, if not more difficult than the Olympics because there are more competitors and more rounds to get through in a shorter period of time. They faced a lot of adversity at the Games, so Montreal is going to be a test of their composure and their ability to bounce back after their struggles in Sochi.”
In contrast to the Olympics, the World Championships take place across just three days of competition, with Elise Christie, Jack Whelbourne, Charlotte Gilmartin and Richard Shoebridge set to compete in all three individual distances; 500m, 1000m, 1500m.
Sochi 2014 Olympian Jon Eley will compete in the men’s 5000m relay alongside Whelbourne and Shoebridge, with fellow relay team mates Paul Stanley from Solihull and Joshua Cheetham (reserve) from Nottingham, completing the line up.
The event schedule for the World Championships is as follows:
Fri 14 March Ladies and Men – 1500 m and Ladies 3000 m Relay, Semifinals
Sat 15 March Ladies and Men 500 m, Men 5000 m Relay, Semifinals
Sun 16 March Ladies and Men – 1000 m, 3000 m, Relay Finals
