Short track skaters return to the ice after World Championships

Britain’s short track podium athletes will be back in action for the first time since the ISU World Short Track Championships this weekend (25th - 26th May) as they compete in the British Short Track Championships on home turf in Nottingham.

The full GB Short Track squad will be competing in the event, including Elise Christie who recently claimed Silver in the 500m at the World Championships in Montreal.

“This will be the first time that the squad will be competing on the ice since their successes at the World Championships in Montreal this March. They have all had a well deserved rest before getting back into a hard block of training, and they are now keen to get back on the ice to compete this weekend” said Performance Director Stuart Horsepool.

In addition to Christie, the full senior squad, who formed part of the most successful Team GB to date at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, will be competing this weekend. The squad includes Jon Eley, Team GB Flagbearer at the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony, who managed his third top 8 finish at his third consecutive Olympic Winter Games with 7th place in the 500m; and Charlotte Gilmartin, who made her Olympic debut in Sochi this year, reaching the Quarterfinal in the women’s 500m race.

The event will include all age group races from pee wee’s (under 13’s) to seniors, in a variety of distances and the public are encouraged to come along to support the athletes over the two day event.

Stuart added: “The British Championships is completely free for spectators, and I would encourage people to come along this weekend and support our fantastic athletes as they prepare for the 2014-15 season.

The British Championships will take place at Nottingham’s National Ice Centre between Sunday 25th and Monday 26th May. For a full schedule of races, go to www.iceskating.org.uk/node/6566.
