GB Short Track announces World Cup squad for 2014-15

GB Short Track announces World Cup squad for 2014-15

Britain’s top speed skaters had their first competitive fixture of the season at the weekend, 20-21 September, with the National Squad Open Trials taking place at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham.

The two day event saw current members of the GB Short Track squad compete amongst themselves and against skaters from across the UK in order to reaffirm their position on the national squad for this coming competitive season.

All the Team GB skaters who competed at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics demonstrated their ability and determination to be successful during the upcoming season, with Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin taking overall first and second positions respectively in the women’s event, and Jack Whelbourne, Jon Eley and Richard Shoebridge taking the top three podium places in the men’s event.

GB Short Track Performance Director, Stuart Horsepool said:  “Considering that this was the first event of the season following an Olympic year, I’m happy with the performances this weekend, but there was some rustiness amongst the skaters which needs to be improved before World Cup 1 in November.

“We mustn’t forget our successes of last season, and with that in mind, we will now be looking towards the World Cup with a view to polishing up the skaters’ performances from a speed, tactics and skills point of view. We have one more competitive event in the form of the Invitation Cup in October where we will focus on preparation for the first event in the ISU World Cup Series”.

The final squad selection for the ISU World Cup Series was finalised following the trials. Eight skaters have been selected, and they will travel to Salt Lake City for the opening World Cup on the 7-9 November.

The men’s squad will be made up of Jack Whelbourne, Josh Cheetham, Jon Eley, Richard Shoebridge and Paul Stanley as well as a new addition in Billy Simms who finished fourth in the Open Selection.

Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin will form the women’s squad, with a view to being joined by 18 year old Kathryn Thomson, who finished in third position at the weekend, later in the season.

Stuart added:  “Kathryn will train with the squad at the National Performance Centre in Nottingham, but she won’t join the squad for World Cup 1 and 2 as she will be focusing her efforts on competing in age group competition in Europe. Her main goal for the 2014-15 season is to compete in the Junior World Championships in Osaka, Japan in February next year.

“We have a strong squad going into the competitive season. They have worked exceptionally hard over the summer months and the times they were skating at trials are a good indicator that preparations have gone well.”

The next competitive event will take place from 17-19 October in Heerenveen in the form of the Invitation Cup, followed by World Cup 1 on 7-9 November and World Cup 2 in Montreal on 14-16 November.
